Alzhemier’s & Hearing Loss
At our Harbor Audiology & Hearing Services offices in Gig Harbor, Tacoma and the surrounding areas we don’t just care about your ears, we also care about your brain.

It’s been proven that untreated hearing loss causes social isolation and cognitive overload, which can cause Alzheimer’s and dementia.

The Study

A Johns Hopkins study tracked brain changes in 126 people over a 10-year period. The results revealed that the subjects with preexisting hearing loss had accelerated rates of brain tissue loss compared to those with normal hearing.

Participants with impaired hearing also lost an additional cubic centimeter of brain tissue each year, and had significantly more shrinkage in regions responsible for processing sound and speech.

The Symptoms

The simplest way to prevent health complications linked to hearing loss is to seek treatment right away if you notice any of these warning signs:

  • Frequently asking people to repeat themselves
  • Difficulty following multiple- person conversations
  • Increasing television or radio volume
  • Trouble hearing in noisy places

Early intervention is necessary for treating hearing loss. If you or someone you know is experiencing two or more of these symptoms, schedule a hearing exam call our Gig Harbor location at (253) 203-6641, Tacoma location at (253) 617-7160 Silverdale location at (360) 692-6650 or contact us online to learn more today.
