Doctor Fitting Female Patient With Hearing AidBalance disorders can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life, leading to dizziness, vertigo, and loss of balance. At Harbor Audiology, we offer comprehensive balance testing and specialized treatments to address these issues and improve our patients’ overall well-being. Our experienced Gig Harbor audiologists employ advanced diagnostic techniques and personalized therapies to identify the underlying causes of balance disorders and provide effective solutions.

Comprehensive Balance Testing

Our team of audiologists is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to conduct a range of balance tests that enable us to accurately diagnose vestibular disorders. These tests play a crucial role in understanding the root cause of dizziness and imbalance, allowing us to tailor treatment plans to each patient’s unique needs.

Videonystagmography/Electronystagmography (VNG/ENG)

One of the key diagnostic tools in our arsenal is the Videonystagmography (VNG) or Electronystagmography (ENG) test. This non-invasive procedure involves tracking the movement of the eyes, head, and body while exposing patients to various visual stimuli. By closely monitoring the eye’s response to these stimuli, our audiologists can pinpoint irregular eye movements that may be indicative of vestibular dysfunction.

During the VNG/ENG test, patients may be asked about any limitations in neck or back mobility, as these factors can influence the test results. Additionally, a critical component of this test is the caloric examination. During this phase, the audiologist introduces warm and cool air into the ear canal while engaging in a conversation with the patient. This thermal stimulation triggers the vestibular system, which controls balance and spatial orientation. The resulting eye movements are recorded and analyzed, aiding in the diagnosis of specific vestibular disorders.

Personalized Treatment Solutions

Once the balance disorder is accurately diagnosed, our audiologists work closely with patients to develop personalized treatment plans. The treatment approach varies depending on the identified issue and its severity. Our goal is to alleviate symptoms, improve balance, and enhance overall quality of life.

Treatment options may include vestibular rehabilitation exercises, which involve specific head and body movements designed to retrain the brain’s interpretation of balance signals. These exercises gradually help patients adapt to different motion stimuli and reduce dizziness and imbalance over time.

In cases where a balance disorder is associated with an underlying medical condition, our audiologists collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care. This holistic approach addresses the root cause of the issue while managing the symptoms effectively.
