Winter Tips for Maintaining Your Hearing Aids

If you will be spending any extended time in the cold or snow this winter, the team at Harbor Audiology has some tips to help you keep your hearing aids in working order.

Here are a few ways you can avoid damage commonly caused by winter weather.

Avoid Moisture

Moisture can develop on your hearing aids the same way fog develops on glasses when you go into a warm building during the winter. Wearing a winter hat made of a breathable material can absorb this excess moisture.

Use a Drying Kit

If your hearing aids are exposed to excess moisture, a drying kit or dehumidifier can prevent your device from being damaged. If you don’t have a drying kit, simply take the battery out, wipe it down, and let it air dry overnight.

Keep Extra Batteries on Hand

As the temperature drops so does the effectiveness of electronics – including hearing aids. While wearing a hat that covers your hearing aids can help prolong battery life, it’s a good idea to have a spare pair of batteries in case they die.

Know the Signs of Malfunction

If you notice sounds fading in and out, crackling, or disappearing completely, there’s a chance you have moisture damage.
