Hearing Aid Styles

Many styles of hearing aids are available. The one that’s right for you depends on your type and severity of hearing loss as well as your lifestyle. Some hearing aid wearers opt for smaller instruments that will be less noticeable to others. For some, a comfortable fit is most important. Luckily, today’s hearing aid options are nearly endless, and it’s easier than ever to find the right combination of style, size and fit for your specific needs.

Hearing aids that have a receiver in the earReceiver In-The-Ear (RITE) –
This type of hearing aid is housed in a shell that rests behind the ear. A wire directs sound into the ear canal. RITE hearing aids are comfortable to wear, but not recommended for severe hearing loss.

Hearing aids that rest behind the earHearing Aids Behind-The-Ear (BTE) –
These hearing aids are enclosed in a curved case that rests just behind the ear and are suitable for varying degrees of hearing loss.

Hearing Aids In-The-Canal (ITC) –
Because they are less visible, ITC hearing aids are considered to be one of the more cosmetically appealing options. While they can be used for mild to severe hearing loss, they are not recommended for children.

Hearing Aids In-The-Ear (ITE) –
These hearing aids are custom-made and fit the shape of the outer ear. They are powerful enough to treat severe hearing loss.

Hearing Aids Completely In-The-Canal (CIC) –
These small, custom-made, discreet hearing aids are appropriate for treating mild to moderate hearing loss but aren’t suitable for children.
